The Tourist Board of Fuerteventura has started distributing translations of 700 typically local products and food dishes to 900 restaurants, bars and cafés of the island. This is being provided so that restaurateurs can adapt their menus to cater for their customers own native language.

Languages to be included are English, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Polish and French

"To help the establishments easily change their wordings, translations have been divided into seven alphabetical headings into Starters, Soups, Fresh Pasta, Pizza, Eggs, Rice, Birds, Meat, Fish and Seafood, Desserts, Drinks and finally, a list of products and food terms which include commonly used kitchen phrases" - reports the Board in a statement.

Dishes will be listed to show the composition or ingredients used, with local names or regional terms that cannot be translated, shown as an explanation in brackets.

The 700 translated entries are made up of 430 different types of dish and beverage, and the remaining 270 entries are gastronomic terms.

Typical Canarian food products include frangollo, gofio, kid, mojo or pot, with explanations shown in each language, as well as any other term and ingredient used in its preparation, as the case of "in the oven", "salt", "Gratin", "vinaigrette", "schnitzel" or "majorero".
